| Terms of Reference of
BTS Ethics Committee |
- To advise the membership through the
Executive and Council on all ethical issues relating to
the field of organ and tissue transplantation.
- To consider specific ethical issues raised
by the members at the request of the Executive or Council.
- To prepare position statements on ethical
issues on behalf of the society.
- To initiate and inform debate on ethical
issues within the society.
- To liaise with the committees of the
British Transplantation Society and Council as appropriate.
- To liaise with outside agencies at the
request of the Executive and/or Council.
Standard Operating Procedures
The committee will consist of five members
elected by the society in a free ballot by
simple majority and the President or a nominated
deputy. The tenure of membership shall be
three years from the date of
election. Members shall be eligible to stand
again for election for a single further term
of three years.
The committee will choose the chair from
amongst themselves in consultation with the
President of the
BTS by simple majority vote. The chair shall
have tenure for three years commencing from
the date of
election and will then not be eligible for
re-election for a period of three years. The
chair shall have authority to invite other
members of the society or individuals outside
the society to advise the committee on specific
issues within their field of expertise.
The committee shall have the power to co-opt
other members as appropriate from the BTS
membership
or outside the membership if specialist advice
is required. Members may also be co-opted
such as to
recognise the broad representative balance
of specialist interests of the society. Co-opted
members will normally serve a term of three
years, renewable for a single further term
of three years by agreement with the chair.
The committee will meet at least three times
per year and report on its activities to the
Executive and
Council of the BTS through the chair.
Communication between committee members will
primarily be by e-mail.
