The Medawar Prize (rules 2008)

1.Two prizes will be awarded at each congress, one to the best clinical paper and one to the best scientific paper presented at the Annual Congress of the British Transplantation Society.

2. Candidates for the prize must be members of the Society and should be under the age of 40 on the first day of the Annual Congress for which the prize is being considered. However, in exceptional circumstances people outside the age range but still in training would be considered with an appropriate signature from their head of department.

3. The work must be presented by the candidate must be original and innovative and have been performed largely or entirely within the United Kingdom.

4. Candidates for the prize will be limited to the first author of the submitted paper. In the rare event that the first author cannot present the paper, it must be withdrawn from the competition (although the work may be presented by another author in another section of the meeting.) Candidates must take note of the meeting dates when submitting their abstract and are expected to make strenuous efforts to ensure that they can present their paper on time.

5. Persons wishing to be considered for the prize must indicate this in their abstract submission. Abstract deadline is 10th January 2008

6. A piece of work which has competed for the Roy Calne Award may be entered for the Medawar Prize. However, the same piece of work cannot win both prizes.

7.The judging panel will be chaired by the President of the Society, and consist usually of the President and between 2 and 6 Members of the Council. The members of the panel will be chosen by the President so as to provide a broad area of expertise. The President may, at his or her discretion, choose members of the panel from outside the Council if this is necessary to obtain the required breadth of expertise. However, no member of the judging panel may have a direct interest in any of the papers of the competition. If the President has such an interest, he or she will nominate a Member of the Council to act as Chairman. The decision of the panel will be final.

8. The prize will consist of a medal and a cheque for £500 presented during the meeting at which the paper is given.
