My undergraduate degree was from Cairo University. I did my Surgery and Transplant training in Southampton, London, Exeter and Manchester. I was appointed consultant transplant surgeon in Exeter in 1992 and moved to Manchester 4 years later. In addition to the standard work in renal failure surgery and kidney transplantation I got involved in pancreas transplantation when it started in our unit in 2001. I have a particular interest in paediatric transplantation and the transition of the young adults with functioning transplants into the adult service. I lead the Surgical Challenges in Paediatric Transplantation forum for the BTS. I served on the council of the BTS 1993 – 1996 and was a member of the working party on organ donation under the chairmanship of Professor John Faber in the 1990s. I served on the training committee of the BTS. I lead on clinical trials in our unit and have initiated several investigator lead studies. The most exciting thing I did outside work is to take part in the Plymouth to Banjul car rally together with Titus Augustine. We drove across the Western Sahara and through the desert of Mauritania and raised £15,000 for charities in the Gambia and for our research fund.
