James Douglas

I have been Archivist of the BTS since 2002. After a period in Law (mainly as a teacher) I entered Medicine, qualifying at Oxford and Belfast in 1969. I was attracted to Nephrology by the pioneering work of Professor Molly McGeown at Belfast and worked with her to set up a successful dialysis and renal transplant programme there. I later became Senior Nephrologist and Director of the Belfast unit, my main interests being in transplant outcomes, acute renal failure, the problems of drugs and toxins in nephrology and medico-legal aspects of renal failure and organ donation. I was a member of ULTRA for ten years. In 2005 I had the privilege of hosting the Joint BTS/Renal Association Congress at Belfast. I resigned from NHS practice in 2007 but still teach topics in clinical pharmacology and medical ethics for Queen's University, Belfast. I enjoy maintaining my contact with transplantation through my BTS post and have recently re-written a history of the Society (and of transplantation in general ) for the website. I welcome material from any member which is of interest from the historical or archival viewpoint.
