My academic career began on completion of A’ levels taken at Mountain Ash comprehensive (Mid Glamorgan, Wales) in 1988 whereupon I went to Sussex University to study biochemistry. Following completion of my degree I briefly worked at a biotechnology company (Celltech) based in Slough before embarking on D.Phil. studies in the field of transplantation at the University of Oxford under the tutelage of Professor Kathryn J. Wood in 1993.
I successfully passed my D.Phil. viva in 1996 and remained in Oxford in Kathryn Wood’s laboratory as a post-doctoral researcher. In 2004, I was awarded a Kidney Research UK Senior Fellowship to continue my work in Oxford which was renewed in 2007 for another 3 years. Since the award of a KRUK Senior Fellowship I have built up a research team within the TRIG group that currently consists of 5 D. Phil. students and a post-doctoral scientist. Broadly my research interests are focussed on determining the mechanisms by which immune cells reject organ transplants and how such responses may be controlled to prevent rejection. Our work has shown that the specific responses of the immune system have a dramatic impact on whether a transplant is rejected or accepted and whether potential tolerance induction therapies are successful.
